My Rating System

Ethan Gunderson

Rating things feels weird. We all have different tastes and tendencies. What I love you may hate, and I don't want to yuck someone's yum. Still, a decent number of people asking for recommendations, especially for coffee. Being able to give them some sort of baseline for the types of coffee I rate highly vs avoid is helpful to determine if they my recommendations will be helpful to them or not.

I started with 1-5 ratings, but that felt too restrictive, and 1-10 feels too tedious. After some digging around on the internet, I've landed on a 1-7 scale.

  • 7 — Perfect, must try, life-changing.
  • 6 — Excellent, worth repeating. Go out of your way.
  • 5 — Good, enjoyable.
  • 4 — Passable, it's fine. I wouldn't repeat/repurchase it.
  • 3 — Bad, don’t do this if you can.
  • 2 — Atrocious, actively avoid, repulsive.
  • 1 — Evil, life-changing in a bad way.

I'm borrowing the idea of a 1-7 system from Steph Ango.
